Tomorrows People

"Through the programmes it runs, Tomorrow's People is a significant force in reducing the level of unemployment in the UK - particuarly long-term unemployment - and in increasing the number of employable people."

Tomorrow's People believes in giving people a hand up rather than a handout.

Unemployment damages people's lives in so many ways. Being out of work means people are more likely to live in poverty housing., have low educational attainment, poor physical health, mental and emotional issues, be victims of crime, have reduced life expectancy and lack of employment prospects.

We put people on the road back to employment, getting them into appropriate, sustainable jobs.

Since we started in 1984, we've worked with over 400,000 long term unemployed. We have a strong record of getting people into sustainable jobs- 90% of the people we help find a job are still employed 3 months later, 76% in employment 12 months on.

We run a number of services and projects to help a wide range of people in the community - from homeless people to the disabled to single parents. Supporting opeople on the road back to employment and giving back their independence literally transforms their lives.

Our specialist employment adviser work in the heart of communities through outreach centres, delivering our services directly to the people who need our support the most. Locations include libraries, schools and colleges, community centres, GP surgeies, mosques and churches. In addition, we work closely with local employers and various partner organisations to deliver a wide range of specialist services.

At the heart of each programme is the one-to-one support and mentoring our specialist employment advisers provide to people free of charge on a confidential basis.

We offer three main types of programme:

  • Back-to-Work programme: including our highly successful GP Employment Adviser service
  • Young People programmes: support for excluded young adults including IT Out and Schools Employment Adviser programmes
  • The Junction and Social Enterprise Businesses: a residential and work programme for ex-offenders

Volunteer Learning Guides

What does a Volunteer Learning Guide Do?

Learning Guides are inspiring people that provide that friendly point of information for the less confident potential adult learner. A Learning Guide is the person who can help them overcome those initial obstacles so they can take the first steps back to learning. Learning Guides are a friendly (but informed) face in the community.

Most Learning Guides help people in their own communities - whether it's people near to where they live or people who have similar experiences. For example; a Learning Guide who lives in Leasowe working with potential adult learners in Leasowe or a Learning Guide who is a lone parent advising potential learners who are also lone parents.

The important thing is that Volunteer Learning Guides can use their own experience and enthusiasm to help others take that first step.

Being a Volunteer Learning Guide

Learning Guides come from all over the borough. They don't have to have any particular qualifications just an interest in doing the work. They get help and support, including free training and accredited qualifications, from Volunteering Wirral at Wirral CVS.

The added bonus is that Learning Guides can use this experience to develop their own skills - its part of the circle of adult learning. Volunteer Learning Guides will have special relationships with community and voluntary groups who provide them with on the spot support and a place to work from.

Learning Guides can be flexible in the amount of time they give and when they give it. The idea is that they work out, with a member of the team, what suits them and what suits the community they are working in. Volunteers will not be out of pocket as expenses are covered.

Meet the Team

On the left is Sandra Riley and the right is Helen Shallcross, these are the Learning Guide Co-ordinators who provide management, support and training to the Learning Guides.

If you would like to talk to a learning guide in your community or are interested in becoming a learning guide please contact the learning guide co-ordinators by telephoning 0151 647 5432 (selecting option 1 on the automated response) and ask to speak to Sandra or send an email to sandra@wirralcvs.org.uk
